In the acute stage of acute rheumatic mitral valvulitis there may be a transient, short diastolic murmur. It is presumably due to edema of the leaflets.
The murmur was described by Dr. Carey Coombs .
His 1924 monograph on rheumatic heart disease was a standard reference on the subject.
He also did pioneering work with coronary artery disease.
