A 2-year-old patient with severe mitral regurgitation associated with a mass originating from the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve is reported. Excision of the tumor and mitral valve repair was performed. Four years later the child remains asymptomati c with no recurrence of the tumor or regurgitation.

Primary lipomatous tumors of the cardiac valves.

A tricuspid valve mass was identified on echocardiogram in a 69-year-old man with ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia; he died with progressive respiratory insufficiency. The abnormal mass was a scribed initially to infective endocarditis, and the diagnosis at autopsy was fibrolipoma, a benign tumor. Although rare, valve tumors should be included in the differential diagnosis of abnormal valve masses identified on echocardiogram.

Fibrolipoma of the mitral valve in a child. Clinical and echocardiographic features.
Barberger-Gateau P, Paquet M, Desaulniers D, Chenard J.

Echocardiographic examination, performed in a 12-year-old boy who had signs of mitral regulation, showed the presence of an abnormal mass of echoes in the left atrium and mitral orifice. These were initially interpreted as representing an atrial myxoma. S urgical exploration showed that the tumor originated from the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve, and, microscopically, the lesion was diagnosed as a fibrolipoma. The clinical and echocardiographic features of this unique type of cardiac tumor are disc ussed.
