Bajpai Laboratory

Dr. Manisha Bajpai Gastroenterology laboratory is a multidisciplinary collaborative team of molecular and computational biologists, gastroenterologists, oncologists, pathologists and cytogeneticists studying biological processes involved in premalignant diseases and cancer of the esophagus. The goal is to improve patients’ quality of life and survival by

  1. Understanding the biology of diseases of the esophagus,
  2. Identifying therapeutic targets to prevent premalignant lesions like Barrett’s epithelium; and
  3. Developing diagnostic methods for the early detection and personalized therapy of esophageal cancer

Dr. Manisha Bajpai, Ph.D. trained as a Molecular, Cell and Developmental biologist at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Jadavpur University a premier scientific research institution in Kolkata, India.

As a postdoctoral scientist Dr. Bajpai trained with Dr. Kiron M. Das, a renowned gastroenterologist and translational scientist at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Gastroenterology (GI) division and the Crohns’ and Colitis Center of NJ. She studied the origin and molecular pathogenesis of Gastroesophageal reflux induced Barrett’s epithelium and patho- immunological processes in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) using human disease models and methods for biomarker discovery and clinical validation.

In the past decade, Dr. Bajpai has initiated multidisciplinary, multicenter collaborative research for clinical validation of biomarkers for early detection of esophageal cancer arising from the Barrett’s epithelium, and identification of targetable molecular pathways for chemoprevention and therapy. Her team is also actively pursuing commercialization of a diagnostic medical device (patent filed).
